Henry - OATS Procedure

I have been receiving orthopedic care from Columbia University Hospital for almost 40 years.  I broke my arm for the first of 3 times when I was 8 years old. I also had a broken leg and several sprains treated there. In 1999 I blew out my left knee playing basketball. My doctor for over 25 years, Dr. Marvin Shelton, referred me to Dr. William Levine.

Dr. Levine diagnosed my torn ACL and damaged meniscus. After the surgery he told me that he had reconstructed my ACL but had removed most of my interior meniscus and there was not anything with a high success rate that could be done to replace it. Over time the pain from the bone on bone contact in my knee became unbearable. I could not run, much less play basketball or any other sports, and at times is was very painful for me to walk or even stand on my feet for long periods of time.

In 2009 I saw Dr. Levine after he performed arthroscopic knee surgery on my wife. He told me about a new procedure called OATS (Osteochondral Autologous Transplantation System), a cartilage transplant surgery. After meeting with him he advised me that I would be a good candidate for a transplant, that it would drastically improve the quality of my life and that the success rate for these surgeries were incredibly high.

11 months ago I had the surgery, and after several months of rehab I can say that Dr. Levine was right. My quality of life has drastically improved and my knee is pain-free after over ten years. Dr. Levine is not only a gifted surgeon but a great communicator. He is always available to answer any questions that may arise pre-surgery, post-surgery and during the rehab process. He is very patient and easy to understand.

Dr Levine and his staff are very attentive and thorough. When I was not working hard enough on my rehab, he was very frank and honest about why I needed to put the work in and what would happen if I did not do it. His staff connected me with a terrific physical therapist that got me over the hump and cleared to run, play basketball and chase my kids around again. I am truly indebted to Dr Levine and his staff for relieving the debilitating pain I endured. NO MORE LIMP! Thanks!
