Dr. William Levine has been nominated to serve as Chair of the AOSSM/STOP Sports Injuries Steering Committee for a 3-year term effective August 1, 2011. The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) is a world leader in sports medicine education, research, communication and fellowship, and includes national and international orthopaedic sports medicine leaders. AOSSM members initiated the development of the STOP (Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention) Sports Injuries campaign in 2008. Members of the Society's Board of Directors, decided that the issue of overuse injuries in young athletes was becoming a critical issue for its members to address. The steering committee was established to investigate what types of activities and materials needed to be developed.

THE INDEPENDENT (UK): RICE for summer sport sprains

It's nearing on the season for summer sports and at times the rigorous workouts without proper stretching can lead to sport injuries. Here is a quick first-aid routine, RICE, to keep in mind when you are biking through the mountains and playing on the fields. William Levine, MD, chief of sports medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia University Medical Center, describes R.I.C.E. as "a first-aid technique that can be applied to most sprains, strains and joint injuries." RICE stands for rest, ice, compress and elevate. Here are some tips from Levine to prevent injuries and the need for RICE: remember to start slow, warm up, take breaks and always listen to your body …
