James - Labrum Repair

I took a fall while skateboarding 4 years ago and landed with my left arm raised over my head. Since then, my shoulder would dislocate doing any normal activity.  I am very active and continued to skateboard, snowboard and mountain bike taking every fall with another dislocation.  I met with two orthopedic doctors immeditaely afte the first fall to try to figure out what was wrong with the shoulder.  After completing two rounds of physical therapy, the strength was back but I still had to stability.

I was working as an electrician at the time and could not afford to take the time off to get my shoulder evaluated.  Once I started my new job, I had the time and resources to finally get the right help.  This is where Columbia Orthopedics stepped in and did a great job.  I found Dr. William Levine through a family who had worked with him and said he was the right doctor for the job.  After meeting with Dr. Levine and getting the proper tests done I was set to have a labrum repair and shoulder stabilization surgery.  Dr. Levine gave me a timeline of 5-6 months before I could go"full speed" so I planned the surgery at the end of the fall so I could make this snowboard season.

About a week before my surgery, however, I suffered a concussion while mountain biking.  Columbia Orthopedics did an outstanding job making sure I was clear of all symptoms before my surgery.  It took about 3 weeks to be symptom-free before I was cleared by one of their Neurologists.  Once I was cleared we continued with the surgery and everything went great.  The site was nearly painless and I had little to no swelling.

Dr. Levine and my physical therapists had me back snowboarding by the end of January.  Both parties did an outstanding job and I am more that confident with my new shoulder.  Now I can participate in all of my activities with no fear of hurting my shoulder.  I should have fixed it years ago but with the help of Dr. Levine and my physical therapists, my shoulder is brand new.
